On the surface the computer and user nodes look the same they both have the same three folders However, as soon as you start clicking any of the folders and exploring the different settings that apply to users and computers, you ll see that while some settings are the same, many settings are very different It is possible to have a single group policy object (GPO) with configuration settings in both the user and computer nodes If a GPO that includes settings in both nodes is applied to a computer, all of the settings will apply to the computer and to any user that logs on to that computer Similarly, if a GPO that includes settings in both nodes is applied to a user, all of the settings will apply to the user no matter what computer the user logs on to Consider Figure 10-2 It represents a domain named mcitpsuccesscom with three organizational units (OUs) named HR, Sales, and Library The HR OU doesn t have any GPOs applied, but the Sales OU has a single GPO applied with a single setting in the User Configuration node turning off the Windows Sidebar The Library OU also has a single GPO applied with a single setting in the Computer Configuration node turning off the Windows Sidebar

As you can see, you can use group policy to manage users and computers by applying group policy settings The easiest way to fully grasp this is to walk through the process for a single group policy setting Once you understand how one setting is applied, you can then apply that knowledge to the other hundreds of group policy settings Imagine that your company wants to ensure that the Windows Sidebar (covered in 3) is turned off for all 500 computers in your network You could visit each computer and modify the settings individually (as shown later in this chapter in Exercise 101) However, if you did it individually, you d have to do this 500 times once for each computer This would simply take too long Enter group policy You could create a single domain group policy object and configure the same settings You would then link the GPO to the domain and it would automatically apply to all 500 computers in the domain Figure 10-3 shows the group policy settings to turn off the Windows Sidebar

If this setting is set to Enabled in your GPO, then all users affected by the GPO would no longer be able to start the Windows Sidebar If it is set to Not Configured or Disabled, users would be able to choose whether to run the Sidebar or not If you didn t want to apply the group policy setting to everyone in the domain, but instead just everyone in a department, you could apply your GPO to an OU OUs are used within a domain to organize users and computers For example, you could have the following departments in your company: Sales, Marketing, HR, and IT You could create four OUs to mimic the company s organization: Sales, Marketing, HR, and IT All user accounts and computer accounts for each department would be placed in their respective OUs

GPO Inheritance GPOs are inherited by child objects In other words, any GPOs applied to a parent are inherited by the children Of course that begs the questions What s a parent and What s a child Organizational units (OUs) are created within a domain and are considered child objects of the domain You use OUs to organize objects such as users and computers to manage them Consider Figure 10-4 It shows a domain named MCITPSuccesscom that includes several containers resembling folders The folders with the extra icon (Domain Controllers, Sales, Virginia Beach, San Francisco, Marketing, HR, and IT) are all OUs and mimic the organization of the company The Sales OU is selected, showing the two OUs within the Sales OU Virginia Beach and San Francisco
