As the number of files in your Web site grows, organizing them into folders and establishing naming conventions will become increasingly important. The need to reorganize or rename pages isn t necessarily a sign of poor planning; more often, it s simply a sign that your Web site has grown. A topic that began as a single Web page might, over time, become a dozen pages and warrant its own folder. And a small collection of picture files will likely become difficult to search after growing to a hundred or so pictures. If you have local or file-sharing access to your Web site s file area, you can move, copy, rename, or delete files with Microsoft Windows Explorer, the command prompt, or any number of utility programs. Even if you don t have such access, you can make changes with an FTP program. Unfortunately, these approaches do nothing to adjust hyperlinks from other pages to the moved or renamed files. Unless you locate and correct these links manually, your Web site won t function properly.

Changing file names and locations from within FrontPage avoids the problem of broken hyperlinks because FrontPage corrects links automatically. Suppose, for example, that you have a picture file named clown.jpg that s located in a FrontPage-based Web site. If you open the site in FrontPage and rename the file joker.jpg, FrontPage changes any picture tags, hyperlinks, or other references to the clown.jpg file within that site so that they point to joker.jpg instead. Of course, this works for any type of file, not just picture files, and it also works when you move a file from one folder to another. Figure 17-1 shows this feature in action. The Web site designer has opened a Web site, switched to Folders view, and renamed the first file listed from cottage.gif to cottage2.gif. After consulting its indexes, FrontPage determines that two pages in the current Web site have links to this file and offers to correct them.

Keeping Your Web Site Up-to-Date FrontPage maintains indexes of all links within a Web site and uses these to find and update the necessary Web pages. To keep these indexes accurate, it s best to always use FrontPage for organizing Web pages. Here are several cautions:
