The Oracle database scheduler (also referred to as the scheduler), replaces functionality previously provided by the DBMS_JOB package. In a nutshell, the scheduler allows the execution of code, both inside and outside the database, in either an ad-hoc fashion or at defined intervals. One of the design goals of the scheduler was to provide (better) support for the execution of jobs in a clustered environment. The discussion of all the scheduler s features is beyond the scope of this chapter, but we will cover the necessary basics for you to understand how the scheduler and RAC services cooperate. The first thing you will notice when dealing with the scheduler is that it is a lot more flexible than DBMS_JOB. Unfortunately, this flexibility comes at the cost of higher complexity. The scheduler uses a number of concepts to facilitate the creation of jobs. For example, metadata for jobs can be defined in a number of entities: Job classes Programs Schedules Windows

servers. Grid Control requires an additional license and is not installed as part of Oracle Collaboration Suite; for this reason, it is not discussed further here.
